Brookings County, South Dakota 314 6th Ave Brookings, SD 57006 Phone: (605) 692-6284 Fax: (605) 696-8211 www.brookingscountysd.gov On the central eastern border of SD, north of Sioux Falls; created Apr 5, 1862 (prior to statehood) from unorganized territory. Name Origin: For Wilmot W. Brookings (1833-85), prominent legislator and associate justice on the Dakota Territory supreme court (1869-73). He promoted the Southern Dakota Railway, and "Judge Brookings" was the name of the first locomotive to enter what is now SD. Area (sq mi): 804.76 (land 794.46; water 10.30). Pop per sq mi: 35.40. Pop 2005: 28,121. State rank: 5. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.40%; 1990-2000 12.00%. Pop 2000: 28,220 (White 95.90%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 1.30%; Other 1.90%). Foreign born: 2.30%. Median age: 26.60. Income 2000: per capita $17,586; median household $35,438; Pop below poverty level: 14.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $23,825-$25,666.
