Brown, Donald D. (David) (1931– ) developmental biologist; born in Cincinnati, Ohio. After receiving several research fellowships, he joined the Carnegie Institution (1961), and later served concurrently as a professor at Johns Hopkins (1969). He made major contributions to studies of RNA synthesis as a direct indicator of gene activity, the control of genes during development, and the isolation of genes.
