Brown, J. G. (John George) (1831–1931) painter; born in Durham, England. He began work in a glassworks, moved to London, emigrated to Brooklyn, New York (1853), and opened a studio in New York City (1860). His genre paintings of street urchins, as in The Card Trick (c. 1880), made him a wealthy and popular artist.
