Click the link for more information. . Browne, Charles Farrar (b. Brown) (Artemus Ward, pen name) (1834–67) writer, humorist; born in Waterford, Maine. In a series of Cleveland Plain Dealer letters (1857–59) purportedly written by Artemus Ward, this newspaperman created the blustery character through whom he satirized contemporary society.
