Brücke, Ernst 

Born June 6, 1819, in Berlin; died Jan. 7, 1892, in Vienna. German physiologist.

Brücke was a professor at the universities of Königsberg (from 1848) and Vienna (from 1849). He received his training at the universities of Berlin and Heidelberg. His major fields were the anatomy and physiology of the organs of vision and digestion, the physiology of blood circulation, and neuromuscular physiology. Brücke’s work on the physiology of speech is especially important.
