Brückner, Alexander
Born Jan. 29, 1856, in Tarnopol’; died May 24, 1939, in Berlin. Polish linguist and literary scholar. Brückner studied at the universities of L’vov and Berlin and was a professor at the University of Berlin (1881-1924). He was a member of the Academies of Sciences of Poland (1888), St. Petersburg (1890), Prague, and Belgrade. He was the author of studies on the history of the Polish language and literature, and his principal work was the Etymological Dictionary of the Polish Language (1927), which is widely known.
