On the southeastern border of NC, west of Wilmington; organized 1764 (prior to statehood) from New Hanover and Bladen counties. Name Origin: For the German city and duchy; the Duke of Brunswick was one of the titles of the British royal house of Hanover.

Area (sq mi): 1050.01 (land 854.79; water 195.21). Pop per sq mi: 104.30.
Pop 2005: 89,162. State rank: 31. Pop change: 2000-20005 21.90%; 1990-2000 43.50%. Pop 2000: 73,143 (White 81.10%; Black or African American 14.40%; Hispanic or Latino 2.70%; Asian 0.30%; Other 3.00%). Foreign born: 2.90%. Median age: 42.20.
Income 2000: per capita $19,857; median household $35,888; Pop below poverty level: 12.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,411-$24,095.

On the central southern border of VA, southwest of Richmond; organized Nov 2, 1720 from Prince George, Isle of Wight, and Surry counties (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Royal House of Brunswick, one of the titles of the British royal house of Hanover (the latter was changed to Windsor during World War I to sound less German).
