Buchan, John, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir

Buchan, John, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir (bŭk`ən, twēdz`myr), 1875–1940, Scottish author and statesman. Included among his works are a history (4 vol., 1921–22) of World War I; biographies of Julius Caesar (1932), Scott (1932), and Cromwell (1934); short stories, essays, and poetry; and adventure novels, including The Thirty-nine Steps (1915), The Path of the King (1921), and Mountain Meadow (1941). Elected to Parliament in 1927, he was appointed governor-general of Canada in 1935 and was raised to the peerage. His tenure in Canada was popular; he promoted good relations with the United States.
