Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge Address: 3013 Estate Golden Rock, Suite 167 Christiansted, VI 08820 Phone: 340-773-4554; Web: www.fws.gov/southeast/buckisland Established: 1969. Location: 2 miles offshore of Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Activities: Boating, diving, snorkeling, hiking. Special Features: Surrounding waters and bays contain reefs and a shipwreck that attracts boaters and divers. Habitats: 45-acre island comprised mostly of cactus, brush, grasslands, and a rocky shoreline. Access: Open during daylight hours; accessible by boat only. Wild life: Refuge was transferred to Fish and Wildlife Service due to its value for migratory birds; however, birds rarely use the refuge because of an overwhelming abundance of black rats.
