Established: 1969.
Location: 2 miles offshore of Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Activities: Boating, diving, snorkeling, hiking.
Special Features: Surrounding waters and bays contain reefs and a shipwreck that attracts boaters and divers.
Habitats: 45-acre island comprised mostly of cactus, brush, grasslands, and a rocky shoreline.
Access: Open during daylight hours; accessible by boat only.
Wild life: Refuge was transferred to Fish and Wildlife Service due to its value for migratory birds; however, birds rarely use the refuge because of an overwhelming abundance of black rats. Visitors may observe red-billed tropic birds, frigate birds, terns, and other species in the vicinity of the island.
