On southeastern border of PA, north of Philadelphia; original county, organized as Buckingham County Mar 10, 1682. Name Origin: Shortened from the original name, Buckingham, for the English county of Buckinghamshire (also called Bucks), home of the Penn family and of many original settlers.

Area (sq mi): 622.11 (land 607.38; water 14.74). Pop per sq mi: 1023.00.
Pop 2005: 621,342. State rank: 4. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.00%; 1990-2000 10.40%. Pop 2000: 597,635 (White 91.10%; Black or African American 3.30%; Hispanic or Latino 2.30%; Asian 2.30%; Other 1.90%). Foreign born: 5.90%. Median age: 37.70.
Income 2000: per capita $27,430; median household $59,727; Pop below poverty level: 4.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $38,236-$40,450.
Unemployment 2004: 4.70%. Change from 2000: 0.90%. Median travel time to work: 28.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 44.60%.
