Budker, Gersh Itskovich

Budker, Gersh Itskovich 

Born May 1, 1918, in the village of Murafa, present-day Shargorod Raion, Vinnitsa Oblast. Soviet physicist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN SSSR) since 1964 (corresponding member, 1958). Graduated from Moscow University in 1941.

From 1946 to 1957, Budker worked at the Institute of Atomic Energy of the AN SSSR. Since 1957 he has been director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Division of the AN SSSR. His principal works are devoted to the theory of uranium-graphite reactors and of the kinetics and regulation of atomic reactors, the theory and design of charged-particle accelerators, plasma physics, and the physics of controlled thermonuclear reactions and high-energy particles. He developed a theory of cyclic accelerators (State Prize of the USSR, 1949). He proposed a method of oncoming beams for studies in the physics of elementary particles (together with others; Lenin Prize, 1967). He has received the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.
