Established 1889; incorporated as a town in 1890, and as a city in 1892. Name Origin: The town was built on the site of an abandoned iron furnace, dubbed Buena Vista, because it supplied cannonballs used in the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican-American War. Area (sq mi): 6.83 (land 6.83; water 0.00). Pop per sq mi: 942.50. Pop 2005: 6,437. State rank: 127. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.40%; 1990-2000 -0.90%. Pop 2000: 6,349 (White 92.80%; Black or African American 4.80%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.40%; Other 1.20%). Foreign born: 0.50%. Median age: 37.90. Income 2000: per capita $16,377; median household $32,410; Pop below poverty level: 10.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,778-$23,612. Unemployment 2004: 3.70%. Change from 2000: 0.40%.
