In south-central VA, north of Lynchburg. Established 1889; incorporated as a town in 1890, and as a city in 1892. Name Origin: The town was built on the site of an abandoned iron furnace, dubbed Buena Vista, because it supplied cannonballs used in the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican-American War.

Pop 2005: 6,437. State rank: 127. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.40%; 1990-2000 -0.90%. Pop 2000: 6,349 (White 92.80%; Black or African American 4.80%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.40%; Other 1.20%). Foreign born: 0.50%. Median age: 37.90.
