Building Systems, Institute of

(full name, V. A. Ku-cherenko Central Research Institute of Building Systems), an institute in Moscow administered by the State Committee on Construction of the USSR (Gosstroi). Founded in 1927 as the State Scientific Experimental Institute of Civil, Industrial, and Engineering Structures, the institute was renamed the All-Union Research Institute of Industrial, Civil, and Engineering Structures in 1932 and the Research Institute of Industrial Structures in 1933. It received its present name in 1963.

The Institute of Building Systems is concerned with the most important scientific problems in the theory of structures and structural mechanics. It also studies the theoretical bases of modern computation and design methods and develops new types of industrial building systems. In addition, the institute establishes the principal all-Union standards for building systems and coordinates research in the field.

The institute includes a number of scientific divisions, laboratories, field stations (for example, the seismological laboratories in the cities of Kishinev, Ulhan-Ude, Frunze, and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski), an experimental design bureau, and a factory for the production of experimental structures and equipment. Graduate courses are offered both at the institute and by correspondence. The academic council is authorized to confer doctoral and candidate’s degrees. The institute publishes collections of articles, monographs, and standards material. It was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1971.
