Bükk

a mountain massif in northern Hungary, in the Western Carpathian system. Elevations to 959 m (Mount Istál-lóskő). The larger, northwestern section is composed primarily of limestones, and the southeastern section is broken by faults along which there were outpourings of andesite lavas during the Pliocene period. Karst forms of relief are broadly developed. The Bükk massif is intensively dissected by valleys of tributaries of the Sajó and Tisza rivers. There are orchards and vineyards on the lower sections of mountain slopes and oak and beech forests higher up.
