Bulatovich, Aleksandr Ksaver’evich
Born Sept. 26 (Oct. 8), 1870, in Orel; died 1918 or 1919, in Lutsikovka, Sumy Oblast. Russian explorer of Ethiopia. Bulatovich visited Ethiopia three times between 1896 and 1900 while attached to the Russian diplomatic mission. He traced the course of the Omo River to its mouth at Lake Rudolf, the interfluvial areas of the Omo and Nile river systems, and he was the first European to cross the Kafue mountain region. He collected valuable ethnological information on several Ethiopian peoples (Sidamo and Galla). In the early 1900’s he took monastic vows. In 1911-12 he again visited Ethiopia for the purpose of establishing a Russian monastery and school there. Upon his return to Russia he concerned himself with literary and theological activities.
