In southwestern NC; organized Dec 5, 1791 from Burke and Rutherford counties (in 1812 annexed Walton County, which was formed in 1803 from Indian lands). Name Origin: For Col. Edward Buncombe (1742-78), a NC officer in the Revolutionary War who died while a prisoner of the British.
