bunraku

Japanese traditional puppet theatre, in which nearly life-size dolls act out a chanted dramatic narrative, called joruri, to the accompaniment of a small samisen. Puppet theatre reached its height in the 18th century with the plays of Chikamatsu Monzaemon and declined later because of a lack of good joruri writers.

1) Fujita's account of the Bunraku adaptation of The Tempest adds another layer to this complex construction: instead of having a new head made for the Prospero puppet, the puppeteers decided to use one that traditionally represented two legendary tragic heroes of Bunraku plays, the exiled aristocrat Kan Shojo in Sugawara and the banished Shunkan, title character of a play that also exists in Kabuki and No versions.
