Bure, Lev Leonardovich
(also, Leon L. Bure). Born June 21, 1887, in Samarkand; died there Dec. 30, 1943. Soviet graphic artist and painter. Honored Art Worker of the Uzbek SSR (1939). Bure studied at V. N. Meshkov’s school in Moscow (1904-05) and attended the studio of F. A. Rubo at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1907-12). In 1926 he was made a member of the Academy of Arts of the Russian Republic. He worked as a cartoonist for Soviet Uzbek newspapers and magazines and produced a number of political posters. As a painter he primarily did architectural landscapes, in many respects following the tradition of V. V. Vereshchagin (Samarkand Registan, 1940, art museum in Tashkent, Uzbek SSR). He also painted genre pictures (Women’s Club, 1930) and historical canvases (Zindan, 1929). The last two paintings are both in the Republic Museum of History, Culture, and Art of the Uzbek SSR, in Samarkand. REFERENCEKatalog iubileinoi vystavki khudozhnika Bure L. L.—XXX let.
