It was founded in the 17th century; its development received impetus with the coming of the railroad in the late 19th century. Burgas

a city and major port in Bulgaria, at the head of the Gulf of Burgas in the Black Sea. Administrative center of Burgas District. Population, 132, 000 (1969). The city is an important transportation junction and one of the most important ports in the country (the equal of Varna). It is used to export agricultural produce (tobacco, fresh fruit, and canned fruit and vegetables), rolled metal, and machines. A special port was created on the southern shore of the gulf for the delivery of oil to Bulgaria’s first oil refining and petrochemical combine, built near Burgas. The city has food industries (vegetable oil, flour, liquor, and canned fruit, vegetables, and fish), electric cable production, ship and railroad car building, and a textile industry. An important fishing center of the country is located in Burgas. A stretch of beaches with a nearby resort complex begins at Maritime Park.
