Burhanpur

Burhanpur (bûr`hänpr'), city (1991 pop. 172,710), Madhya Pradesh state, W central India, on the Tapi River. The city is a rail junction with trade in textiles and oilseed. The manufacture of gold and silver embroideries, which flourished until the 18th cent., continues on a smaller scale. Founded c.1400, Burhanpur has a partially ruined palace (c.1610) of Akbar.

The districts which were declared drought-affected are Alirajpur, Ashok Nagar, Anuppur, Barwani, Bhind, Balaghat, Burhanpur, Chhatarpur, Dewas, Dindori, Datia, Damoh, Guna, Gwalior, Jhabua, Jabalpur, Katni, Khandwa, Morena, Mandla, Narsinghpur, Panna, Ratlam, Raisen, Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Singrauli, Shahdol, Sagar, Sehore, Shivpuri, Sheopur Kalan, Shajapur, Tikamgarh, Umaria and Vidisha.
As Crill observes, this art was also practised in other centres in Gujarat, and Burhanpur and Sironj (in Madhya Pradesh), but the art of the Coromandel Coast was unsurpassed in fineness of drawing, precision of dyeing, and depth of colours.
He had his agents in Agra, Burhanpur, Calicut, and Goa, among other places, for the purchase and sale of commodities.
