Burla

a river, mainly in Altai Krai, RSFSR. Length, 489 km; basin area, 12, 800 sq km. It flows in the Kulunda Steppe, chiefly over a swampy floodplain. The bed is mostly indistinct; it is interrupted, especially in the lower reaches, by a chain of partly drying lakes. In years of high water it empties into Lake Bol’shoi Azhbulat, which is undrained; and in years of low water it ends in Lake Bol’shoe Topol’noe. The mean annual discharge above the place where it empties into Lake Bol’shoe Topol’noe is about 3 m3/sec. It freezes in the shallow portions. The lakes are used for fishing and fish breeding.
