In east-central TX, northeast of Austin; organized Mar 24, 1846 from Milam and Washington counties. Name Origin: For Gen. Edward Burleston (1798-1852), senator in the first TX congress (1836), vice president of the Republic of TX (1841), and TX legislator.

Area (sq mi): 677.78 (land 665.54; water 12.24). Pop per sq mi: 25.90.
Pop 2005: 17,238. State rank: 130. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.70%; 1990-2000 20.90%. Pop 2000: 16,470 (White 69.00%; Black or African American 15.10%; Hispanic or Latino 14.60%; Asian 0.20%; Other 10.70%). Foreign born: 3.00%. Median age: 37.90.
