Bush, Nikolai Adol’fovich 

Born Oct. 29 (Nov. 11), 1869, in Slobodskoi, in what is now Kirov Oblast; died Aug. 7, 1941, in Belozersk. Soviet botanist. Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1920).

Bush studied at the University of Kazan and the Forestry Institute in St. Petersburg. In 1895 he began to work at the University of Iur’ev (Tartu) and, in 1902, at the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden. From 1912 to 1931 he worked in the Botanical Museum and, after 1931, in the Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works are on flora and vegetation, mainly of the Caucasus, but also of Siberia and the Far East. He described many new species of Caucasian plants, made botanical-geographic maps of Osetia, Digoria, and other regions, and proposed a division of Siberia into botanical-geographic areas.
