Bushnell, David (?1742–1824) inventor, physician; born in Saybrook, Conn. After graduating from Yale (1775) he built the first American submarine, Bushnell's Turtle, which was tried unsuccessfully against British ships. He was a Continental army engineer (1779–83), spent several years in France, and returned to the U.S.A. (1795) to teach and practice medicine in Georgia. How to thank TFD for its existence?
