Butia

a genus of South American palms. The tree has a trunk that ends in a crown of large pinnatifid leaves. They are unisexual, monoecious plants used widely in decorative gardening. The fruits of some species of Butia are edible. In the USSR several species are grown on the Black Sea coast. The most frequently grown is B. capitata, or Cocos capitata; it grows up to 5 m high, with bluish-green or gray-green leaves 4 m long. The inflorescences are more than 1 m long and are strongly branched. The seeds contain about 60 percent oil. The plants are native to southern Brazil.
