Butyl Acetate

butyl ester of acetic acid. Three structural isomers are known, of which two are widespread: normal butyl acetate, CH₃(CH₂)₃OCOCH₃, and isobutyl acetate, (CH₃)₂CHCH₂OCOCH₃. They are colorless liquids with a characteristic ester odor and boiling points of 126.1° C and 118.0° C, respectively. Butyl acetates are poorly soluble in water. They are miscible with organic solvents and vegetable oils; they also possess all the characteristics of esters. Butyl acetates are obtained by heating the corresponding alcohol with acetic acid in the presence of H₂S0₄. They are good solvents of chlorinated rubber, nitrocellulose, Glyptal resins, and other film-forming substances widely used in the manufacture of paints and varnishes.
