Büyük Menderes

(known in antiquity as the Meander), a river in western Turkey. Length, 380 km. It rises on the Anatolian Plateau and flows into the Aegean Sea, forming a delta. In its lower course the riverbed is very twisting—which explains why its ancient name, “Meander,” came to denote the twisting course of rivers.
