Buzhane
one of the ancient Russian tribes (tribal alliances) before the formation of a unified Kievan Rus’. They are mentioned in the Book of Annals. They lived along the Bug River (probably the Iuzhnyi Bug); hence their name. According to data of the Bavarian Anonymous Chronicle (tenth century), they had 230 gorods (castles). Some scholars believe that the Buzhane and Volynians were earlier called Dulebians. After their incorporation into Kievan Rus’ in the tenth century, the Buzhane lost their independence and were no longer mentioned in historical sources. REFERENCETret’iakov, P. N.
