Byerly, Perry (Edward) (1897–1978) seismologist; born in Clarinda, Iowa. His career at the University of California: Berkeley (1925–64) included the directorship of its seismographic station (1950–62). From examining travel-time curves of western North American earthquake waves, he postulated that the earth's mantle is discretely layered and penetrated by the base structures of mountains.
