Bykovskii, Mikhail Dorimedontovich 

Born Oct. 29 (Nov. 10), 1801; died Nov. 9 (21), 1885, in Moscow. Russian architect.

Bykovskii studied under D. I. Giliardi (after 1816). In 1830 he became an academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He was the founder and the first chairman of the Moscow Architectural Society (in 1867). He worked in the style of late classicism (the Gorikhvostov almshouse in Moscow, 1839). He created the clearly romantic ensemble at the Marfino country estate near Moscow (1837-38) in the spirit of Gothic architecture. Bykovskii later turned to the forms of Italian Renaissance architecture (the Loris-Melikov house in Moscow and the Vonliarliarskii house in St. Petersburg, both in the 1860’s) or eclectically combined elements of Renaissance architecture with romanesque and ancient Russian forms (St. John Monastery and belfry of the Passion Monastery in Moscow, in the 1850’s and 1860’s).
