Byrnes, Robert Francis

Byrnes, Robert Francis (1917–  ) Slavic studies specialist, educator; born in Waterville, N.Y. Known for his work on conservatism in modern Europe and anti-Semitism in modern France, he taught longest at Rutgers (1954) where he was director of the Russian and East European Institute (1971–76). He served concurrently as a distinguished professor of history at the University of Indiana: Bloomington (1967). A consultant for the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (1964), he was president of the American Association of Advanced Slavic Studies (1978–79) and author of numerous books and articles.
