(also byl’), in Russian folk art a brief oral tale about some event, told as if it had actually taken place and concerning improbable happenings, discovered treasures, and meetings with “the evil spirit.” Byval’shchiny are disappearing under the influence of cultural growth in kolkhoz villages.
