CDE Help Lessons

Lessons are lists of terms about a particular topic that are included with the Encyclopedia. They generally contain only the important terms and serve as a springboard to others.

The Lessons Menu

Review
To view a lesson, select REVIEW and double click on lesson name. Use NEXT and PREV buttons to move forward and backward in the list. Click LIST to see all the terms, and click TOP to go to the first term. When finished, click DONE.

Create
To create your own topic list, select CREATE. Type in a description of the list. ADD ENTRY LAST LOOKED UP appends the name of the last term you looked up to the list (using Look Up, not just scrolling by). Therefore, you have to look up the term first and then click the button.

Note: you can manually create your own lists using Notepad or any text editor. To review the format, open any of the existing .LSN files in the Lessons subfolder (see Path below). Be sure to use a file name other than one already in use.

Edit
To edit an existing lesson, select EDIT. The lesson will be opened in your default editor such as Notepad. Note that our HTTP version ("CDE on the Web") automatically re-installs the standard lessons with each update. Therefore, if you are using "CDE on the Web" and wish to edit a standard lesson, be sure to save it with a different file name.

Delete
You may delete any lesson file by clicking DELETE. Note that our HTTP versions (CDE on the Web and CDE on an Intranet) will automatically re-install the standard lessons each time we have a new version deployed.

Path
To find out where your Lessons subfolder is located, select PATH.

Multiuser Versions
If you are using a multiuser version of the Encyclopedia, the lesson files are stored on the server. If you want to create your own lessons, you probably need to create a Lessons folder and save them on your local PC, because you may not have administrative rights to write anything to the server. Be sure to select PATH from the Lessons menu and change it to your local drive.

If you create lessons on your PC and still want to use the lessons on the server, copy the server lessons to the Lessons folder on your machine. Otherwise, you will have to switch the path to the remote server to get those lessons and then back to your local folder to get the ones you created.
