Secret Service and Carnegie Mellon University's CERT/CC, found that more than 60 percent of the 49 attacks examined in the study were carried out with "relatively unsophisticated methods of attack," such as social engineering; only 39 percent used a toolkit or other program designed to cause havoc.
Most of the incident reports of computer break-ins received at the CERT/CC could have been prevented if system administrators and users kept their computers up-to-date with patches and security fixes.
Top five sources of information concerning new threats for those surveyed were Internet Storm Centre by SANS Institute, SecurityFocus, CERT/CC, McAfee and SecLists in that order.
