CR/LF

Also found in: Acronyms 0.03 sec.

CR/LF

(Carriage Return/Line Feed) Two characters that indicate the end-of-line (end-of-paragraph) in standard PC text files. These are the codes Windows and DOS applications insert into the text when the enter key is pressed (see enter key).

We Have to Be Different
Windows uses the CR/LF characters. The Mac uses only the single CR character, and Unix/Linux uses only the single LF character. In this field, people are often too creative for their own good. Half the processing in the computer industry is converting from one format to another.

Look for the 0D and 0A
The hex numbering for the carriage return and line feed characters are 0D and 0A. In ASCII, they are the decimal numbers 13 10 (see ASCII chart).
