Normally, CRTC2 sits outside the nucleus waiting for the signal that allows it to slip inside and do its work and after entering the nucleus, it teams up with a protein called CREB and together they switch on the genes necessary to increase glucose output.
These studies also found that blocking the activation of a transcription factor called CREB and a critical cell survival signaling kinase called Akt disrupted prostate cancer cell growth and induced cell death, a balance that is altered in cancer cells.
Although the researchers weren't sure how CREB works in the brain, "we thought that maybe this protein is a common link" between the mechanisms of tobacco and morphine addiction, says Blendy.
