cable-stayed bridge [′kā·bəl ‚stād ‚brij]
(civil engineering)
A modification of the cantilever bridge consisting of girders or trusses cantilevered both ways from a central tower and supported by inclined cables attached to the tower at top or sometimes at several levels.

Measuring about 8km in total, the bridge describes a slow curve across the sea; at the same time it rises gradually to a central cable-stayed bridge over the big international shipping lane, Flintrannan, before descending to Lernacken and the Swedish coast.
