cache miss

cache miss
A failure to find the required instruction or data in the cache. In such a case, the item is read from main memory. Contrast with cache hit. See cache.
(storage)cache miss - A request to read from memory which cannot be satisfied from the cache, for which the main memory has to be consulted.

Opposite: cache hit.

In a Northstar processor, an L1 cache miss eats up a minimum of five cycles, but switching to another instruction stream only takes three cycles.
These performance and scaling benefits permit larger key spaces to be supported by a single server and decrease cache miss rates thereby reducing load on backend database servers.
