Kayseri (kī`sĕrē'), city (1990 pop. 416,276), capital of Kayseri prov., central Turkey, at the foot of Mt. Erciyas. It is an important commercial center and has textile mills, sugar refineries, and cement factories. Carpets are made there. The ancient Caesarea Mazaca Caesarea Mazaca , ancient city of Asia Minor, also called Caesarea of Cappadocia. As Mazaca it was the residence of the Cappadocian kings. The city was renamed (c.10 B.C.) Caesarea by Archelaus, king of Cappadocia.

, it was taken by the Seljuk Turks in the mid-11th cent., briefly held (1097) by the Crusaders, and captured (1243) by the Mongols. The city was occupied by the Mamluks of Egypt in 1419. Sultan Selim I incorporated Kayseri into the Ottoman Empire in 1515. The city has numerous historical remains. Nearby is Kültepe (Kanesh), an archaeological site that dates back to the 3d millennium B.C.

Kayseri 

a city in central Turkey; administrative center of Kayseri Vilayet. Population, 168, 000 (1970). Railroad station and highway junction; it is a very important industrial and trade center. The city has the largest cotton-textile combine in Turkey (constructed in 1934–35 with economic and technical aid fromthe USSR). The city has flour-milling, sugar, meat and dairy, and wood-products industries, as well as an aircraft assembly factory. Kayseri is one of the country’s main rug-weaving centers.
