The lilac, purple, pink, or white flowers are in racemose inflorescences. The fruit is a two-segmented pod. There are 15 species, growing in Europe, Western Asia, North Africa, America, and Australia, predominantly along sandy sea-coasts. Four species are found in the USSR. Cakile baltica is found along the Baltic coast, C euxina, along the shores of the Black and Azov seas, and C. arctica and C. lapponica, along the coasts of the White and Barents seas.
