In NE CA, SE of Sacramento; original county; organized Feb 18, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Calaveras River, which flows through the county, from the Spanish 'skulls,' so named because skulls were found on the river's banks in the 1830s.

Area (sq mi): 1036.84 (land 1020.04; water 16.81). Pop per sq mi: 46.00.
Pop 2005: 46,871. State rank: 44. Pop change: 2000-20005 15.60%; 1990-2000 26.70%. Pop 2000: 40,554 (White 87.50%; Black or African American 0.70%; Hispanic or Latino 6.80%; Asian 0.90%; Other 7.20%). Foreign born: 3.00%. Median age: 44.60.
Income 2000: per capita $21,420; median household $41,022; Pop below poverty level: 11.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,745-$25,395.
Unemployment 2004: 6.50%. Change from 2000: 0.60%. Median travel time to work: 34.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 41.20%.
