A one-year study of 15 people with MS to test the safety of a form of vitamin D called calcitriol found participants having fewer exacerbations during the study than before it began, although the study was not designed to test this outcome.
In addition to systemic symptoms and hypercalcemia (a result of the production of high levels of calcitriol by activated macrophages), local symptoms may include sinusitis, lymphadenopathy, hearing loss, facial nerve palsy, and dysphonia.
Management of post-transplant bone disease involves regular bone mineral densitometry assessment, administration of anti-resorptive agents such as calcitriol or bisphosphanates, and the maintenance of good nutrition, physical exercise and normal body weight.
