In northwestern MO, east of Saint Joseph; organized Dec 29, 1836 from Ray County. Name Origin: For Matthew Caldwell, an officer of the KY Volunteers in the War of 1812, or for Gen. John Caldwell (?-1804), KY Indian fighter and legislator.
