California State Mining & Mineral Museum Location: Mariposa fairgrounds, 1.8 miles south of Mariposa on historic Highway 49. Facilities: Museum, exhibits, gift shop, restrooms (é). Special Features: Museum houses California's official mineral collection, established in 1880 to educate the public about the significance of the state's mineral resources. The collection includes nearly 20,000 specimens, including many rarities discovered during the mid- to late 1800s. Displays include the Fricot Nugget, the largest crystalline gold specimen discovered during the Gold Rush era.
