Caller ID
A telephone company service that sends the caller's telephone number between the first and second ring of the call. If the calling number is not blocked, the calling number is displayed on the handset or base station of the called party. This is one feature within a set of services called Custom Local Area Signaling Services (CLASS). See ANI.
Caller ID - (CID) A feature of some modems.

Calling Number ID Runs Into Trouble Calling number identification is a crucial ingredient in ISDN applications, but it is threatened by courts, law-makers, and special interest groups.
Digital connectivity offers a wealth of information including called and calling number identification, the reason a call was redirected, and date and time stamps.
Ericsson's KH 618 also stores the last five incoming numbers in the Calling Number Identification (CNI) log, features last number re-dial for up to five numbers, and has 50 alpha numeric memory locations.
