Calvert Cliffs State Park Location: In Calvert County, 14 miles south of Prince Frederick on MD routes 2 and 4. Facilities: 6 youth group camping areas (open Apr 24-Oct 30), picnic tables, pavilion, playground (é), foot trails (13 miles). Activities: Youth group camping, fishing, hiking, bicycling (on service road only), hunting. Special Features: Calvert Cliffs, which dominate the shoreline of Chesapeake Bay for 30 miles in Calvert County, were formed over 15 million years ago, when all of southern Maryland was covered by a shallow sea. More than 600 species of fossils have been identified from these cliffs, with the teeth of various species of shark the most abundant. Visitors may hunt for fossils on the open beach area and keep what they find, but access to the cliffs is not permitted due to their constant erosion.
