In south-central MD, south of Annapolis; original county, organized as Patuxent County in 1654; name changed in 1658. Name Origin: For the family name of the Lords Baltimore, proprietors of MD.

Area (sq mi): 345.09 (land 215.17; water 129.91). Pop per sq mi: 408.60.
Pop 2005: 87,925. State rank: 15. Pop change: 2000-20005 17.90%; 1990-2000 45.10%. Pop 2000: 74,563 (White 83.00%; Black or African American 13.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.50%; Asian 0.90%; Other 2.10%). Foreign born: 2.20%. Median age: 35.90.
Income 2000: per capita $25,410; median household $65,945; Pop below poverty level: 4.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $31,285-$33,665.
Unemployment 2004: 3.30%. Change from 2000: 0.80%. Median travel time to work: 39.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 60.60%.
