Camille Sylvestre

Born Feb. 12, 1916, in Fort-de-France, Martinique; died Dec. 24, 1962. Prominent figure in the labor movement on the island of Martinique.

A journalist by profession, Sylvestre was elected to serve in the secretariat of the Martinique Federation of the French Communist Party in 1947. From 1952 to 1957 he was political secretary of the federation. Sylvestre was elected general secretary of the Central Committee of the Martinique Communist Party after the party’s formation in 1957 and maintained that post until his death.
